Private Servers
A private server lets you and up to nine friends run Project: Escape Room in a locked lobby—no randoms joining mid-puzzle, no queue at peak hours. This page covers the two Roblox tiers (Public Private Server and VIP Server), setup steps, voice-chat workarounds, and per-map tips for when a private server actually makes a map easier.
Why run a private server
Project: Escape Room is fully cooperative and most Challenge maps are designed for 2–5 solvers. A private server removes the two biggest sources of failed runs: random teammates who leave during a timer, and lobby queue spikes that push you onto a fresh instance every retry.
- Friend-only lobbies—no strangers dropping mid-Office or quitting during a Temple timer.
- Up to 10 players on Roblox Private Servers and VIP Servers (public lobbies cap at 5).
- Re-roll the same instance until the puzzle layout matches the walkthrough—Bank pipes and Pyramid coffin symbols are static, but some randomized elements (Santas Workshop safe, Spaceship breaker error code) reset between rounds.
- Practice Challenge maps (Temple ~5.5%, Pyramid ~6.5%, Lab ~7.2%) with the same team to learn callouts before grinding the badge.
- Coordinate voice via Discord, Roblox voice chat (age-verified accounts), or in-game proximity chat—private lobbies are quiet enough for short callouts.
- Office dual-mode codes (7615 / 6482) are easy to mix up in a busy public lobby—a private team agrees on mode before entering the elevator.
Server tiers
Both Roblox server types support up to 10 players and run the same Project: Escape Room build. The main differences are cost, who can join, and whether the server persists between visits.

How to start a private server
- Buy the Private Server game pass. Open the Project: Escape Room game page (Place ID 17844293708), scroll to the store section, and purchase "Private Server" for 10 Robux. The pass must be on the creator's game (Serif Games), not a third-party resell.
- Click the ⋯ (three-dot) menu → Create Private Server. On the game page, click the three-dot menu next to the Play button. Select "Create Private Server," give it a name (e.g., "Temple Challenge practice"), and confirm. The server appears under Games → Private.
- For VIP servers: enable VIP and share the invite link. VIP Server costs 100 Robux / month and auto-renews. Toggle it on, then copy the join link from the VIP Server page. Anyone with the link joins—even without owning the Private Server game pass themselves.
- Invite teammates via Roblox or Discord. Use the in-game Friends list or paste the invite link in your Discord / group chat. Make sure teammates have the Private Server game pass (or VIP link) before queuing, otherwise the join button silently fails.
- Choose mode before the elevator loads. On Office the lobby sign defaults to Challenge. Click it to Beginner before pressing Start if you want the simpler codes (7615 / C28 / 531624). Mixing modes is the #1 reason keypads "do nothing."
- Reset between attempts. Leave the server and rejoin from the Private Server list to fully reset puzzles and randomized elements. The in-game "Restart" button only respawns players—puzzle state persists until the host leaves.
Voice chat on a private server
Project: Escape Room does not have a built-in team voice channel. Most squads use Discord, but Roblox also has a platform-level voice chat for age-verified (13+) accounts.
- Roblox voice chat is opt-in—go to Account Settings → Privacy → Voice Chat to enable. It works in any private server once enabled.
- Discord push-to-talk is the cleanest option for callouts: keypad digits, color names, "I have the key," etc.
- Use short callouts in dense rooms—Bank laser hallway, Office cubicle phase, Prison yard gate—so you do not miss your own timer.
- Pin the YouTube walkthrough in a second monitor or Discord screen-share for first-time Office Challenge runs.
- Mute proximity chat in /settings if you do not want in-game audio bleed-through on top of voice.
Maps that benefit most from a private server
These are the maps where random teammates most often cost you the run. A friend group of 3–5 with voice chat cuts clear time roughly in half.
Office
Reception color callouts need 2–3 people standing in different parts of the lobby. Private server lets the team agree on Beginner (Red/Yellow/Purple/Blue) or Challenge (Blue/Orange/Red/Green) before the elevator moves.
Temple
Brazier patterns change between rooms and require a runner who watches the lily pads while a reader calls the Ruby/Amethyst order. Random teammates often light the wrong brazier and waste a timer.
Bank
The laser hallway wants a spotter while a mover sneaks through. Public lobbies usually have neither role filled, so the team wipes on the first attempt.
Spaceship
Breaker switches and the escape pod both need two people—one to read the tablet error code, one to flip switches while reading the LED row.
Lab
Test-tube chemistry and the control room finale both reward a designated "reader" while another player physically fills the tubes. Solo runs almost always miss the periodic-table poster clue.
Limits and gotchas
A few quirks of Roblox private servers that bite first-time hosts.
- Private Server game pass refunds are limited—if you cancel mid-month, you usually keep the server until the period ends.
- Private servers do not earn official badge progress for the host in some Roblox experiences—check Serif Games announcements; Project: Escape Room badges work normally on private servers as of August 2026.
- VIP Server monthly billing requires sufficient Robux balance—top up a day before renewal so the server does not lapse mid-event.
- Roblox occasionally rolls back private servers for a few minutes during platform maintenance. Save puzzle progress by screenshot before a long Bank or Office run.
- Friend-region routing can lag one player severely—everyone should be on the same Roblox region setting if possible.
